What is infant safe sleep?

Infant safe sleep practices decrease baby's chances of dying from a sleep-related death or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in their first year of life. Many actions can be taken to protect baby including having baby sleep in a safe environment; by themselves, on their back, and in a bassinet, crib or portable crib.

What is a safe sleep environment?

There are a lot of products made for baby's sleep space, but are they safe? To prevent the risk of SIDS and other sleep-related deaths, research shows that it's important to have an infant safe sleep space.

An infant safe sleep space includes:

  • Baby sleeping in a crib, bassinet or portable crib like a Pack 'n Play
  • Firm and flat sleep surface (such as a mattress in a crib), covered by a fitted sheet
  • Smoke-free home
  • Alone in their own room or in the same room as a responsible adult. No stuffed animals, bumper pads or any other items listed below can be in baby's sleep space.

An infant safe sleep space does NOT include:

  • Adult or child beds
  • Bed or crib wedges
  • Blankets, quilts or comforters
  • Bouncers
  • Bumper pads
  • Car seats*
  • Crib pillows
  • Drop side cribs, manufactured before 2011
  • Incline sleepers like Rock 'n Play (recently recalled)
  • Infant loungers
  • Inflatable mattresses
  • Nursing pillows
  • Sleep positioners
  • Sofas or chairs
  • Soft mattress or loose sheets
  • Stuffed animals

*Babies can sleep in car seats while they are being transported to their destination. After baby has arrived at their destination, remove baby from the car seat and place them in a crib, bassinet or portable crib with a safe sleep environment.
