Press Release

Oakland County Clerk's New Mobile Office Big Hit in Berkley

Pam Stoia (left) from Berkley with granddaughter, Breana and Ruth Johnson (right).Oakland County, Michigan, August 21, 2009 -- The Oakland County Clerk's Mobile Office, which visited the Berkley Public Library Thursday, provided copies of property records, birth certificates, marriage licenses, death certificates, passport applications and divorce judgments to more than 40 Oakland County residents, said Ruth Johnson, the Clerk & Register of Deeds, Friday.

"We received such a warm reception," said Johnson. "Customers were so pleased that we brought service to the south end of the county. We are thrilled we can provide this convenient service at virtually no cost.  Our office in Pontiac can be a very long drive for people, especially with gas prices today."

Customers included Linda Denomme of Oak Park, who works at the Detroit Zoo and came to the Mobile Office during her lunch hour for copies of documents. Pam Stoia of Berkley brought her granddaughter Breana, 2, to get a copy of her birth certificate. Lisa Helmick of Southfield came to get a copy of a birth certificate for her son, Jackson.

"This was so convenient, there were no lines and the people were really friendly," Helmick said. "I didn't want to drive all the way to Pontiac with the little one in the car. This is great!"

Pam & Breana being waited on at Berkley Mobile OfficeMobile Office employees have computer access and printers so they can provide customers with on-the-spot documents. Normal copy fees apply. The Mobile Office, modeled after a successful program in Macomb County, offers many services, including: certified copies of birth, death and marriage records, registration of assumed business names, military discharge forms, passport applications, copies of Oakland County Circuit Court records and copies of property records and deeds.

The Mobile Office costs virtually nothing because it simply redeploys employees and resources in regional locations. The next Clerk's Mobile Office stop will be 11.am. to 1 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit, 6600 W. Maple Road, in West Bloomfield Township. The event is open to the general public.

"Our job is to get citizens the best possible service at the lowest possible cost, whether we are serving them at our main office in the Oakland County Courthouse in Pontiac, online at www.oakgov.com/clerkrod or with our Mobile Office," said Johnson.
