Fixing Michigan’s Broken Military Voting System

County Clerks, Local Clerks, Veterans to Testify Wednesday in Favor of House Bill 5279 to Ensure the Votes of Overseas Troops Get Home in Time to be Counted

WHO:            Ruth Johnson, the Oakland County Clerk and Carmella Sabaugh, the Macomb County Clerk, will testify before the House Ethics and Elections Committee in favor of House Bill 5279, sponsored by State Rep. Vince Gregory (D-Southfield). This bill will help ensure the votes of overseas military personnel make it home in time to be counted. The clerks will be joined by local military members, local clerks and veterans’ group representatives. Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett, who also supports the bill, has been invited to testify as well.

WHAT:           Michigan’s military voting system got a failing grade in a national report because our troops and their families stationed overseas do not have enough time to return their ballots to be counted on Election Day. House Bill 5279 provides an easy solution to overseas mailing delays that will put proven technology to work, save tax dollars and maintain safeguards and integrity in overseas the absentee voting process.
