Oakland County, MI- Keeping a child well is as important as receiving treatment when he or she is sick. Preventative care is quite different than “sick child care”. This type of care is important because it allows the health care provider to review the child’s growth and development, give shots, provide tests and exams and answer any of the parent’s questions.
Oakland County Health Division’s Child Health Clinics (CHC) offer free well-care services for children birth through school entry. Children must be enrolled in the program by two (2) years of age and will receive the following from skilled Public Health Nurses:
Immunizations
Height and weight measurements
Physical examinations
Hearing and vision screening
Lab testing
Growth and developmental testing
Information on health and safety issues
Guidance/referrals on behavioral, learning, and health problems
“CHC and well-care check-ups are important because they give a full picture of the child’s health. They go way beyond treating a baby with a fever or a child complaining of an earache. They help the parent look for and find any problems before they become serious,” stated Barbara Draper, Public Health Nursing Supervisor for Oakland County Health Division’s Child Health Clinics.
Oakland County Health Division Child Health Clinics are offered at sites in Lake Orion, Pontiac, Southfield, and Walled Lake. Families without well-care coverage through their health insurance provider are eligible for this service.
