Safe Prom and Graduation Celebrations
May 9, 2008--As the school year draws to a close, there are many opportunities for high school students to celebrate, socialize and have fun.
Remember that providing an environment (such as hosting a party, renting a hotel room or limousine) where alcohol is consumed by minors is illegal and dangerous.
Giving alcohol to anyone under 21 years of age, under any circumstances, could result in the following:
- Prosecution: A minimum sentence of three months in jail and/or a $500 fine.
- Confiscation of materials associated with a violation.
- Lawsuits: If alcohol is provided to a minor and the minor in turn hurts someone, themselves or damages property.
If you are thinking of renting a limousine for a teen make sure the limousine company:
- Is member of the National Limousine Association
- Follows strict operating standards for prom including: privacy screens open at all times; no alcohol, intoxicants or cigarettes allowed; and if alcohol or other substances are detected, the chauffeur will phone the parents or will immediately return the passengers to the original pick-up location.
Consider some of the following options when planning a safe, fun and unforgettable prom or graduation party:
- Talk to your teen about making responsible decisions and sign the Contract for Life together (www.sadd.org/contract.htm).
- Host an alcohol-free party and talk to other parents about hosting non-alcoholic parties.
- Provide teenagers with non-alcoholic beverages options.
- Make sure your teens friends are not bringing alcohol to the party
In addition, some schools conduct awareness activities such as Grim Reaper Day, Underage Drinking and Driving assemblies, and a drunk driving car on display in front of the school, to make students aware of the risks during this special time.
