After nine years at the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office, Layne was recruited to Fried Saperstein Abbatt, PC as an associate attorney. It's a move she believes helps her improve the quality of life for Oakland County residents.

A graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy Law School, Layne is a steering committee member for the Oakland County Coordinating Council Against Domestic Violence. She is part of a task force that helps educate and bring together the public to design and implement solutions to prevent domestic violence. Since 2003, Layne has served as a pro bono attorney for HAVEN, a shelter for abused women and children.

Layne was named the 2004 Spirit of Detroit Award Winner for her contributions to urban youth in education. She was awarded the Gary Burnstein Clinic Esteemed Women in Michigan award in 2011, and co-coached the Detroit School of Arts' Forensics Team during its four-time championship status.
