Is your child ready for kindergarten? This checklist can help you stay organized as you prioritize your child’s health and prepare them for school.

Here’s how you can help your Kindergartener have the healthiest school year possible:

  • Kindergarten Dental Screening: Michigan law requires students have a dental screening before or shortly after their first school year begins. Finding and treating dental problems early helps children be well-rested, able to eat, and ready to learn! Schedule an appointment with your child’s dentist for a screening. We also offer Kindergarten dental screenings for children who live or learn in Oakland County. Schedule an appointment for your child online or call 1.800.848.5533 for questions.
  • Hearing and Vision Screening: Michigan Public Health Code, (Act 368 of 1978), requires hearing and vision screening for kindergarten entrance. Hearing and vision screenings done in preschool by a health department technician, physician or eye doctor fulfills this requirement. Oakland County Health Division offers free hearing and vision screening for children that live and learn in Oakland County. Call (248) 424-7070 for an appointment.
  • Immunizations: Being up to date on immunizations is the best way to protect your family against serious vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, mumps and rubella. Vaccines are safe and effective and has helped prevent the spread of life-threatening diseases for decades. Children must follow state vaccines laws (Spanish) to attend school. Contact your child’s health care provider to schedule an appointment. Immunizations are also available at the Health Division offices in Pontiac and Southfield for all ages with no appointment needed. Call 1.800.848.5533 if you have any questions.
