Substance Use Prevention
Programs
Oakland County Health Division offers various, evidence-based, prevention programs, funded by the Oakland Community Health Network, aimed at reducing risky behaviors that lead to substance use. Specific program information is listed below. All programs are provided at no cost.
CATCH My Breath
- A youth e-cigarette, JUUL, and vape prevention program specific to grades 5-12.
- Evidence-based program shown to substantially reduce students’ likelihood of vaping in the year following program implementation. Students also showed a significant increase in knowledge of the dangers of vaping and an increase in positive perceptions about choosing a vape-free lifestyle.
- 4 lessons, 30-45 minutes each.
- Offered in-person or virtually to schools and community organizations.
Vape 101
- Educational presentation about the dangers of vaping
- Learn how e-cigarettes operate, how to identify commonly used devices, health and safety concerns, and prevention resources.
- Geared towards adults who interact with youth - teachers, school staff, parents/guardians, community members/organizations.
- 60-90 minutes (can be tailored).
- Offered in-person or virtually.
Michigan Model for HealthTM
- A comprehensive, evidence-based health education curriculum utilizing skills-based instruction.
- Offering the the Social and Emotional Health (SEH) and Alcohol, Tobacco, and other Drugs (ATOD) modules.
- SEH module: Focuses on students gaining critical skills to navigate challenges, making informed choices, and building positive relationships.
- ATOD program: Addresses alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, ensuring that students are equipped with the tools they need for a healthy and successful future.
- Lessons are approximately 40 minutes long, taught once weekly in a school classroom setting. Lesson count varies by program and grade.
- Content aligns with the Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations for Health (GLCEs), Michigan Merit guidelines for Health, and the National Health Education Standards.
Technical Assistance for Safe Medication Disposal
- Learn how and where to properly dispose of unused and/or expired medication.
- Staff provide technical assistance to organizations and community members upon request.
- Offered in-person or virtually.
