Suicide Prevention
If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Call, text or chat 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Suicide is a significant public health problem. For each suicide death, family and close friends are at higher risk for suicide themselves. Many others are affected in a variety of ways, including those providing emergency care to the victims and those who may feel they failed to prevent the death.
The vision of the Oakland County Suicide Prevention Task Force is zero suicides in Oakland County.
The mission of the Task Force is to connect partners throughout Oakland County who are committed to preventing suicide across the lifespan and promoting hope and healing in the community.
To achieve both the mission and vision, the Task Force is driven by the belief that suicide is generally preventable. The Task Force believes it's role within the suicide prevention process works best when volunteers, those with lived experience of suicide, and professional stakeholders unite to:
- Eliminate the stigma associated with suicide prevention
- Increase awareness and access to behavioral health services
- Provide evidence-based and research-informed training and resources
- Share timely and relevant local data
- Seek and respond equitably to community needs
- Support and empower suicide-care first responders
- Advocate for policy, system and environment changes that support preventing suicide.
A plan was developed to focus and coordinate suicide prevention efforts in Oakland County. Our partners will guide and implement these activities by engaging public and private stakeholders.
