Offices are wheelchair accessible and treat patients of all ages. Language translation may be available, but it is best to have someone come with the patient. The Dental Program sees all medically compromised patients, initially. If a referral is necessary, we will help.

No. Oakland County has only general dentists and not specialists such as oral surgeons, endodontists (root canal), periodontists (gum disease), pedodontists (children's specialist) or orthodontists (braces). If a patient needs a specialist, we will make the appropriate referral. We refer to the dental schools in Detroit and Ann Arbor; also Detroit Receiving Hospital, Tri-County Dental Health Council and the private sector. Outside referrals are at the patient's own expense.

What will a parent or guardian need to do?

Parents can take their child to their family dentist and have them fill out MDHHS-6067 no sooner than 6 months prior to the start of school. There are also screening events at Oakland County Health Division and throughout the community.

Who can complete MDHHS-6067?

A dentist, dental hygienist or dental therapist may fill out the screening form.

Is there a difference between a dental exam and a dental assessment?

A dental screening looks at the mouth for signs of dental disease. If disease is found, a referral is made for a dental exam. Only a dentist may provide an exam and a treatment plan to treat the disease. 

What if my student has cavities?

They will need to have the cavities filled to stop them from getting bigger. A dentist is the only person who can treat cavities. The person who completes your child's dental screening will help with appointments for any needed follow up care. 

What if I do not have a dentist?

What if I cannot afford to take my student to the dentist?

Enroll in the Michigan's Health Kids Dental Program and contact Nurse on Call at 1-800-848-5533 for help finding a dental home.
