The Oakland County Animal Shelter helps to boost adoptions with the creation of satellite outreach centers. These centers will feature cats taken from the shelter and available for adoption at the satellite location.

The Oakland County Animal Shelter & Pet Adoption Center suggests visiting your local shelter several times before making a decision. Take the animal for a walk and spend some time with them. Find out which animal's personality fits with your lifestyle.

Animals adopted at the Oakland Pet Adoption Center are vaccinated, spayed/neutered, treated for parasites and tested for heartworm (dog) or feline leukemia (cat). Any dogs four months of age and older adopted from Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center will be issued a dog license, as per Michigan State Law.

We do understand that sometimes adoptions just do not work out and you must bring the animal back. A dog or cat may be returned within 30 days of adoption for a full refund. Please be aware that refunds are not immediate; Oakland County will mail you a refund check. This process can take up to 4 weeks.

As long as the pet that you are returning is healthy and its temperament is fine, it will go back up for adoption. Please provide us information about the reason you are returning the animal! We will include this information in its profile and that will help us find a suitable home for the animal in the future.

Another way you can learn more about which pet is the right fit for you is to become a volunteer. The Center is always in need of volunteers to help us with our animals.

Note: It is the policy of this shelter that every dog over 4 months of age being adopted leave with an Oakland County Dog License. Some cities, townships and counties will not honor this tag. Please check with your local municipality within 30 days to ensure you are adhering to local laws and ordinances.
