Probation is a sentence alternative that allows the offender to live and work in their community under the supervision of a probation officer. This decision is made by the presiding judge after careful assessment of a person's background, behavior and potential for success. The Probation Department works under the direction of the Court Administrator and the supervision of the Chief Probation Officer to provide investigation and case management services to the Court.

The 50th District Court Probation Department serves an exclusively adult misdemeanor offender population. Although acting independently, our Probation Department strives to maintain a professional working relationship with police agencies, prosecutors, defense attorneys and treatment providers to ensure the safety of the public. The Probation Department protects the records of all probationers to ensure privacy and to maintain the highest level of professionalism.

Probation is a privilege, not a right. While under the supervision of the Probation Department, the person on probation must comply with the conditions ordered by the Court including any rehabilitative, preventive or vocational/education programs. You may also be required to pay restitution determined by the prosecutor to crime victims, complete community service and submit to random alcohol and/or drug testing.
