Facilities Planning & Engineering
The Facilities Planning & Engineering (FPE) division is responsible for building space management and planning, move management services for new and existing buildings, furniture design, building finish standards, and project management for renovation and construction projects for the county facilities.
FPE also provides technical support to FM&O, Facilities Management Administration, Property Management, CPD, and the Office of Sustainability. FPE prepares the space allocation report annually for the county budget, forecasts future county space needs, and prepares the Buildings, Grounds, & Infrastructure Report, along with record keeping of more than 12,000 facility record drawings and campus utility infrastructure records.
Key responsibilities:
- Space Allocation: FPE Tracks building occupancy, occupied and vacant space for all county owned facilities. Space allocation is used forecast building and county department needs. It is also a critical component of the county annual budget and helps determine funding for building operations.
- Interior Space Management: FPE project staff evaluate interior building spaces, procure office furniture, workstations, ancillary items, building signs, and other building finish materials for functional building spaces.
- Ergonomics: FPE’s certified ergonomic evaluators evaluate employee workspaces and make recommendations to support healthy ways of working.
- Project Management: Project Coordinators and Project Managers have direct fiscal responsibilities for project budgets, schedule forecasting, and construction tasks.
- Sustainability: FPE’s goal is to design, procure, and standardize fixtures, furniture, and equipment emphasizing the needs of people and the environment. Project Coordinators work with furniture manufacturers to evaluate their sustainability practices when selecting furniture for county buildings.
- Accessibility, Life Safety & Inclusiveness: FPE evaluates building spaces and construction projects to make improvements to building code compliance and the ADA, with a goal for a safe and barrier-free campus.
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) & Computer Aided Design (CAD): Space tracking, building record management, and construction standards are developed and tracked through GIS, CAD, and other specialized software. GIS and CAD staff track building assets that make up the County’s digital footprint.
- Wayfinding: Wayfinding is a crucial to navigating to and within county facilities. FPE oversees wayfinding initiatives and improvements to building navigation.
