Oakland County Veterans' Services has experienced benefits counselors who can provide assistance to veterans in filing claims or appealing adverse decisions regarding the following benefits.

Disability Compensation

Monetary compensation for a disability that arose during or were aggravated by service or are presumed to be related to military service. In addition, the surviving dependent of a service member who died in the line of duty or from a service-related injury or illness may be eligible for monetary compensation.

Veterans suffering from PTSD may be eligible for benefits:

  • Service-connected disability comp
  • Mental health treatment

Pension

Monetary benefit to wartime veterans with limited income and who are either age 65 or older or who are permanently and totally disabled due to a non service connected disability. This benefit may also be available to the dependents of a deceased veteran.

  • Hearing Hearing screening services and treatment, including hearing aids
  • Speech-language Speech-language pathology services for Veterans with brain and spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s Disease, ALS, Dementia, and more
  • Service-connected disability compensation Service-connected disability compensation for hearing loss

Health Care

The VA is a full-service healthcare provider to veterans who meet eligibility criteria. As a general rule, a veteran must be enrolled, and treatment must be at VA facilities or approved for outside facilities.


Burial Benefits

The VA provides a variety of burial benefits including:

  • Burial in a National Cemetery
  • Headstone or marker at any cemetery
  • Burial flag
  • Burial allowance
  • Presidential Memorial Certificate

In addition, Oakland County may provide a burial allowance, marker foundation fee and flag case.


Education

The VA pays benefits to eligible service members and veterans pursuing an approved education or training program. In addition, Vocational Rehabilitation benefits may be available to service-connected veterans.


Life Insurance

The VA provides insurance benefits to service members and veterans. As a general rule, veterans pay premiums on these policies. However, premiums may be waived in certain circumstances.

Home Loans

The VA provides home loan guarantees that may allow veterans to receive more favorable terms on a primary residence.


Transportation Program

Oakland County Veterans' Services provides barrier-free transportation to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in Detroit and Ann Arbor for veterans seeking treatment.
